Sucralfate
Antipeptic Ulcerant · Cytoprotectant
Indications
Acute and chronic forms of gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis duodenitis, gastric erosion & bile reflux.
Dosage
Adults: 1 gm 4 times daily on empty stomach one hr before meals and at bed time. Can also be given 2 gm twice a day on empty stomach. Usual treatment period, 4-6 wk or up to 12 wk in resistant cases. Prophylaxis, 1 gm six times daily; max 8 gm daily. Note: No antacids within 1/2 hr before or after sucralfate. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Constipation, diarrhoea, GI upset, dry mouth, rash.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Dialysis. Precautions: Renal impairment.
Interactions
Tetracyclines, phenytoin, cimetidine, digoxin.
Advice to Patient
Take 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Take medication with water. If any other medication is taken, wait atleast 2 hours before taking sucralfate. If antacids are also prescribed, do not take them within 30 minutes of taking sucralfate. Contact prescriber if constipation persists.

Onset: 1-2 hr. Duration: 6 hr. Absorption: Oral: 3-5%. Metabolism: Not metabolized, excreted unchanged in urine. Bioavailability: 5%. Excretion: Urine (excreted unchanged). Faeces.
Unlicensed Use
Children: Prophylaxis of stress ulceration in child under intensive care: 1 mth-2 yr: 250 mg 4-6 times daily. 2-12 yr: 500 mg 4-6 times daily. 12-15 yr: 1 gm 4-6 times daily. 15-18 yr: 1 g 6 times daily; max. 8 g daily. Benign gastric and duodenal ulceration: 1 mth-2 yr: 250mg 4-6 times daily. 2-12 yr: 500 mg 4-6 times daily. 12-15 yr: 1 gm 4-6 times daily. 15-18 yr: 2 gm twice daily (on rising and at bedtime) or 1 gm 4 times daily (1 hr before meals and at bedtime) taken for 4-6 wk, or in resistant cases up to 12 wk; max. 8 gm daily.
