Indications

To stop the flow of blood in gastro-intestinal haemorrhage.

Dosage

Adults: By IV infusion 3.5 mcg/kg/hr every 12 hrly. See literature. Children: Not recommended.

Administration

One 250 mcg vial for a 75 kg patient, diluted immediately prior to use with a solvent of 2 mL 0.9% NaCl provided and given as a slow IV bolus over not less than 1 minute. This should be immediately followed by a continual IV infusion of 3.5 mcg/kg/hr, i.e., one 3 mg vial given over 12 hrs. The solution may be either saline or D5W and should be adjusted to guarantee an outflow of 250 mcg somatostatin/hr. The continual administration should last a minimum of 48 hrs and a maximum of 120 hrs (5 days).

Advice to Patient

Contact prescriber immediately if there is allergic reaction (swelling on lips, difficulty in breathing, rash, hives, peeling of skin), severe headache, light-headedness, confusion, loss of consciousness, sweating, slow heartbeat. Lab tests like growth hormone levels, blood glucose levels, and thyroid function are required during therapy to check the progress, get them done as recommended by prescriber.

Pharmacokinetics

Metabolism: Rapidly degraded by peptidase enzymes present in cells and plasma. Half-life elimination: 1-3 mins.
