Sodium Iron Edetate
Iron Plain and with Folic Acid · Haematinic
Indications
Iron-deficiency anaemia.
Dosage
Adults: Initially 5 mL three times daily increasing gradually to 10 mL three times daily. Children: Up to 1 yr, 2.5 mL twice daily; 1-5 yr, 2.5 mL three times daily; 6-12 yr, 5 mL three times daily.
Adverse Effects
Nausea, diarrhoea.
Interactions
Tetracyclines.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Iron-chelate is split within the GI tract, releasing elemental iron which is absorbed and rendered available for Hb regeneration. Iron absorption is enhanced in iron-deficiency states. Excretion: Faeces (mainly).
