Indications

Pain and restricted mobility in degenerative and traumatic changes of the knee and other synovial joints.

Dosage

Adults: One injection by intra-articular injection once weekly for 3-5 consecutive wk. Course may be repeated at not less than 6 mth interval. Children: Not recommended.

Administration

Intra-articular: Injected directly into the knee joint.

Adverse Effects

Transient pain and swelling at injection site.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Infection or skin disease at injection site. Hypersensitivity to avain proteins. Precautions: Acute joint inflammation, venous or lymphatic stasis of the leg. Reduce joint effusion prior to inj.

Interactions

Other intra-articular preps, quaternary ammonium disinfectants.

Advice to Patient

Inform prescriber if you have allergy to eggs, birds or bird products. Contact prescriber if there is itchy skin rash, difficulty in breathing, swelling on face/lips/tongue/throat. Avoid strenuous and weight-bearing activities that last longer than 1 hour.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Absorbed and diffuses slowly out of the inj site. Metabolism: Degraded by a family of enzymes called hyaluronidases. Excretion: Via the canal of Schlemm.
