Indications
Treatment of skin graft donor sites, wounds, burns, infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.
Dosage
Adults: Apply in layer 3-5 mm thick. Change dressing three times a wk for ulcers and daily for burns. Children: Up to 3 mth, not recommended; others, same as adult.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Impaired renal or hepatic function. G6PD deficiency.
Interactions
Phenytoin, sulfonamides, oral hypoglycaemics, enzymatic debriding agents.
Advice to Patient
Applied by professional in burn care setting. Sterile-gloves are worn before application. Thickness of medication applied is 1/16 inch. Burned areas should remain covered all the time with cream.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Not absorbed through intact skin. When applied to extensive areas and/or to damaged tissues, sulphadiazine is released in contact with body tissues and fluids, which may then be systemically absorbed from the site of application. Metabolism: Hepatic. Excretion: Urine.
