Indications

Hyperphosphataemia in haemodialysis.

Dosage

Adults: Initially, 800-1600 mg swallowed whole during meals three times daily. Titrate according to serum phosphate levels, usually 800-4000 mg with each meal. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

GI upset, very rarely intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation, ileus, diverticulosis, pruritus, rash.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Bowel obstruction, hypophosphataemia. Precautions: Swallowing disorders, severe gastro-paresis, diverticulosis, gastric retention, active inflammatory bowel disease, gastric motility disorders, history of major GI surgery. Monitor serum electrolyte levels. 'Vitamins may be required. Long term use.

Interactions

Cyclosporin, mycophenolate, tacrolimus, levothyroxine, ciprofloxacin, antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants.

Absorption: Not systemically absorbed. Excretion: Faeces.
