Amoebicide · Nitroimidazole
Indications
Amoebic dysentery, hepatic amoebiasis, trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis in adult women.
Dosage
Amoebic dysentery: Adults: 2000 mg as a single dose. Children: 30 mg/kg body wt. as a single dose. Hepatic amoebiasis: Adults: 1500 mg daily in one or more doses for 5 days. Children: 30 mg/kg body wt. daily in one or more doses for 5 days. Trichomoniasis: Adults: 2000 mg as a single dose. Sexual partner should be given same dose. Bacterial vaginosis: Adults: 2000 mg as a single dose.
Adverse Effects
GI disturbance, blurred tongue, unpleasant taste.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Alcohol during treatment. History of blood disorder.
Interactions
Disulfiram, alcohol.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Oral: Rapidly and completely absorbed. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: 17 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 4 hrs. Excretion: Urine (approx. 15% of single 2 gm oral dose).
