Indications

Roxithromycin sensitive infections of ENT, bronchopulmonary, genital (excluding gonococcal infections) and skin. Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis in subjects who have come in contact with the patient.

Dosage

Adults: 150 mg in the morning and evening 15-30 min before meals. Children: 6-11 kg: 25 mg in the morning & evening; 12-23 kg: 50 mg in the morning & evening; 24-40 kg: 100 mg in the morning & evening. All 15-30 min before meals.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, allergic skin reaction.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Hepatic insufficiency.

Interactions

Ergot derivatives. Carbamazepine, theophylline, cyclosporin, warfarin.

Advice to Patient

Take before meals. Swallow whole tablet with a glass of water. Contact prescriber if there is any allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, swelling on face/lips/tongue/throat), white/furry/sore tongue and mouth, sore/itchy vagina, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, flatulence, headache, loss of appetite, red/itchy skin, ringing in ears, tiredness, disturbed taste.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic (partially metabolized). Bioavailability: Oral: 50%. Half-life elimination: 8-13 hrs. Prolonged in children and in patients with renal/hepatic impairment. Time to peak, plasma: 2 hrs. Excretion: Faeces (mainly as unchanged drug). Urine (7-10%). Lungs (15%).
