Indications

Prevention & replenishment of reduced circulatory blood volume & interstitial fluid by replenishing water and electrolytes in E.C.F. under the following types of stress: Before, during and after surgery. Trauma, scalds and burns etc.

Dosage

IV: Neonates >28 days, Children and Adults: Dose is dependent upon the age, weight, laboratory determinations, concomitant therapy and clinical condition of the patient. Adults: 500 mL/3L/24hr. Children: 20-100 mL/kg/24hr.

Administration

Administered intravenously, but can also be given intraosseously in emergency situations. Use an aseptic technique when adding medications or accessing the container. Do not use with vented administration sets unless the vent is closed to prevent air embolism. Reconstitution: Usually not needed; comes as a pre-mixed, ready-to-use soln. Compatibility: Do not administer with Ciprofloxacin, Cycosporine, Diazepam, Ketamine, Lorazepam, Nitroglycerin, Phenytoin, Propofol. Stability: Generally stable for at least 4 hrs with many drugs when co-administered (Y-site).

Adverse Effects

Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema may occur with a large volume and/or rapid infusion.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Lactacidaemia (lactic acidosis) with severe liver damage. Precautions: Renal failure due to renal diseases. Cardiac failure. Reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases. Hypertonic dehydration. Severe liver damage. Alkalosis. Lactic acid metabolism disturbances. Sodium Chloride content of this solution is 6.0 gm/litre. Therefore, care should be taken in those cases where salt intake is restricted as in oedema, hypertension etc.
