Indications
Prevention and replenishment of reduced circulatory blood volume and interstitial fluid by replenishing water and electrolytes in E.C.F. under the following types of stress: Before, during and after surgery. Trauma, scalds and burns etc.
Dosage
Adults: The usual adult dosage is 500-1000 mL at one time by intravenous drip infusion. The usual infusion rate is 300- 500 mL per hr (about 75-125 drops per min) for children.
Adverse Effects
Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema may occur with a large volume and/or rapid infusion.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Contraindications: Lactacidaemia (lactic acidosis) with severe liver damage. Precautions: Renal failure due to renal diseases. Cardiac failure. Reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases. Hypertonic dehydration. Severe liver damage. Alkalosis. Lactic acid metabolism disturbances. Sodium Chloride content of this solution is 6.0 gm/litre. Therefore, care should be taken in those cases where salt intake is restricted as in oedema, hypertension etc.
