Indications

Active immunization against rabies.

Dosage

Adults & Children: Pre-exposure prophylaxis: 3 SC or IM inj of 1 mL administered at intervals of 4 wk. A booster dose every 1 to 3 yr in cases where there is persisting risk. Post-exposure prophylaxis in non-vaccinated & vaccinated persons: See literature.

Adverse Effects

Mild reactions at inj site, fever, headache, myalgia, lymph node swelling, fatigue, arthritis, GI disorders. Rarely, circulatory reactions, sweating, chills, paresthesia, allergic & neurological reactions (e.g. paresis).

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Pre-exposure prophylaxis in individuals with acute disorders & pregnancy. Pre-exposure prophylaxis in individuals with known allergy to components of the vaccine. Precautions: Congenital or acquired immunodeficiency. Lactation. Post-exposure immunization in patients with known hypersensitivity to vaccine components. Inadvertent intravascular injection may lead to shock.

Interactions

Immunosuppressive agents, antimalarial drugs.
