Indications

For passive prophylaxis of rabies after animal bites or exposure. Exposed person should be immunized simultaneously with rabies vaccine.

Dosage

A single dose of 20 IU/kg body-wt by IM inj. If possible part of the dose should be unfiltered around the wound.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, chills, fever, headache, dizziness, arthralgia, myalgia, muscle spasms, low back pain, allergic reactions, injection site reactions, anaphylactic reactions, thromboembolic events. Rarely hypotension, aseptic meningitis, acute renal failure.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: IgA deficiency, interference with live virus vaccines. Precautions: History of typical reactions to blood or blood products. Risk factors for thrombotic events or acute renal failure. Monitor for adverse reactions and anaphylactoid reactions during infusion.

Interactions

May interfere with live vaccines to induce an immune response and a suitable interval should separate their administration.
