Pyrantel Pamoate

Anthelmintic · Antinematodal

Indications

Gastrointestinal parasites: Pinworm, roundworm, hookworm when present alone or as a mixed infestation in both adult and children.

Dosage

Roundworms, Pinworms, or trichostrongyliasis: Adults & Children: 10 mg (base)/kg body weight as single dose. In confirmed diagnosis the dose is to be repeated in 2 wk. Hookworms: Adults & Children: 10 mg/kg body weight in single dose on each of 3 consecutive days.

Adverse Effects

GI and CNS disturbances; rash.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Precautions: Hepatic dysfunction, anaemia, malnutrition.

Interactions

Piperazine.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Small portion is absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic (partially metabolized). Time to peak, plasma: 1-3 hrs. Excretion: Faeces (mainly). Urine (7%).
