Indications

For the improvement of neurological deficits in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Parkinsonism and ataxia of spinocerebellar degeneration. Assessment of thyroid function and thyroid stimulating hormone reserve.

Dosage

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Adults: 200-500 mcg by IV infusion at 2 to 19 mcg per min. Assessment of thyroid function and thyroid stimulating hormone reserve: Adults: IV inj 200 mcg. Children: 1 mcg/kg.

Adverse Effects

After rapid IV administration, desire to micturate, flushing, dizziness, nausea, strange taste; transient increase in pulse rate and blood pressure; rarely bronchospasm.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem. Precautions: Severe hypopituitarism, myocardial ischaemia, obstructive airway disease.

Interactions

Dopamine, bromocriptine, chlorpromazine, thioridazine, aspirin, glucocorticosteroid, theophylline, lithium, ranitidine, oestrogens.

Half-life elimination: IV: 6.5 mins. Time to peak, plasma: IV: 2 mins.
