Indications

Hyperuricaemia associated with gout; prevention of recurrence of gouty arthritis, uricosuric agent in gout.

Dosage

Adults: Take half tab two times daily for 1 week, then 1 tab two times daily. May be gradually increased to maximum 2 gm daily in 2-4 divided doses. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Anaemia, skin rash, hypersensitivity, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sore gums, flushes, increased urine frequency, uric acid stones.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Renal uric acid calculi, blood dyscrasias. Precautions: Peptic ulceration.

Interactions

Salicylic acid.

Onset: 2 hrs (effect on penicillin levels). Absorption: Completely absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Bioavailability: >90%. Half-life elimination: 5-8 hrs (dose-dependent). Time to peak, plasma: 2-4 hrs. Excretion: Urine.
