Indications
Ocular infections.
Dosage
Adults & Children: Apply once daily to once hourly depending on severity.
Adverse Effects
Rise in intra-ocular pressure, corneal thinning, cataract. Aplastic anaemia (rare).
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Contraindications: Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent infections. Glaucoma. Precautions: Prolonged use in pregnancy or infants.
Advice to Patient
Wash hands properly before use. To instill medication into eyes, tilt head back, look upward, instill drops or apply thin layer of ointment inside lower eyelid. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Contact prescriber if there is eye pain, changes in vision, no improvement or worsening of condition. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Avoid prolonged use. Do not use any other eye preparation for atleast 10 minutes. Do not share medication with anyone else. Wear sunglasses when in sunlight to prevent photosensitivity.

PREDNISOLONE: Absorption: Absorbed through aqueous humor. Systemic absorption rarely occurs. Metabolism: Locally metabolized. Small amount absorbed into systemic circulation is metabolized via hepatic route. Half-life elimination: 3-4 hrs. Excretion: Urine (mainly). Faeces. CHLORAMPHENICOL: Absorption: Well absorbed. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: Adults (normal hepatic and renal function): 1.5-3.5 hrs. Impaired renal function: 3-4 hrs. Severely impaired hepatic function: 4.6-11.6 hrs. Children (1 mth-16 yrs): 3-6.5 hrs. Infants 1-2 days old: 24 hrs or longer and is highly variable, esp in low birth-wt infants.
