Piperacillin and Sulbactam
Broad-spectrum Penicillin · Beta-lactamase inhibitor/Broad-spectrum penicillin
Indications
Lower respiratory tract infections, complicated and uncomplicated UTI, intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, bacterial septicaemia, polymicrobial infections.
Dosage
Adults: 6 gm by slow IV injection or infusion eight hourly. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Skin reactions, Gl disturbances, allergic reactions, superinfection.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Renal failure. Patients with low K+ reserves.
Interactions
Probenecid, drugs affecting blood Coagulation and/or thrombocyte function.

PIPERACILLIN: Metabolism: 6%-9%. Bioavailability: IM: 71%. Half-life elimination: Infants 2-5 mth: 1.4 hrs. Infants and Children 6-23 mth: 0.9 hr. Children 2-12 yrs: 0.7 hr. Adults: 0.7-1.2 hrs. Metabolite: 1-1.5 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: Immediately following completion of 30-min infusion. Excretion: Urine (68%). Faeces (10%-20%). SULBACTAM: Half-life elimination: Children 1-12 yrs (normal renal function): Mean range: Approx. 0.7-0.9 hrs. Adults (normal renal function): 1-1.3 hrs. Excretion: Urine (approx. 75%-85%).
