Indications
UTI, respiratory tract infections, ENT infections, gynaecological infections, abdominal and hepatobiliary infections, bone and joint infections, skin infections, septicaemia and endocarditis, meningitis.
Dosage
ORAL/IV INFUSION: Adults: 400 mg twice daily. Children: Not recommended.
Administration
Adults: 400 mg in D5W (250 mL), administered by slow IV infusion over 1 hr twice daily.
Adverse Effects
Gl upset, headache, insomnia, pain in muscles and joint.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Precautions: Avoid exposure to the sun or ultraviolet light during treatment. Severe hepatic insufficiency. Streptococci and pneumococci show only intermediate susceptibility as such should not be prescribed as first line treatment in respiratory tract infections when a bacteriological examination has not been carried out.
Interactions
Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium hydroxide. Theophylline.
Advice to Patient
Take with meals. Contact prescriber if there is any allergic reaction (rash, hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling on face/lips/tongue/throat), nausea, vomiting, muscular pain, headache. Avoid direct sunlight, wear sunscreen, proper eyewear and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity.

Absorption: Well absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Bioavailability: Oral: 100%. Half-life elimination: 8-13 hrs. Excretion: Urine (majorly). Faeces.
