Indications
Oxytetracycline sensitive infections.
Dosage
ORAL: Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hr. Children: 25- 50 mg/kg every 6 hr. INJECTION: IM: Adults: 250 mg every 6 hr or 300 mg every 8 hr or every 12 hr. Children: 15-25 mg/kg body-wt up to max 250 mg daily inj. The dosage may be divided at 8 or 12 hourly intervals.
Administration
For an adult, give IM inj in upper outer quadrant of buttocks or mid-lateral thigh. Deltoid muscle may be used but only if well developed. In children, give injection only in mid-lateral thigh.
Adverse Effects
Tooth discolouration, enamel hypoplasia, hepatotoxicity, blood disorders, reduced fibula growth rate; avoid use in children under 8 years, unless no alternative. Gl disturbances. Allergic reactions. Superinfections.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Renal impairment. Precautions: Hepatic impairment, myasthaenia gravis, SLE.
Interactions
Milk, antacids, mineral supplements, oral contraceptives.
Advice to Patient
Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Take with a full glass of water in an upright position. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Avoid direct sunlight, wear sunscreen, proper eyewear and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity. Patients who take an oral contraceptive should use an additional contraceptive method during therapy.

Absorption: Oral: Readily absorbed. Half-life elimination: 9.2 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 3 hrs. Excretion: Faeces (majorly).
