Muscle Relaxant · Central anticholinergic (skeletal muscle relaxant)

Indications

Musculoskeletal pain.

Dosage

Adults: 1 tab twice daily. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Dry mouth, nausea, blurred vision, dizziness, confusion, tremor, GI upset, restlessness.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Glaucoma, urinary retention, Myasthaenia gravis, prostatic hypertrophy, porphyria, tardive dyskinesia, GI obstruction. Precautions: Tachycardia, renal, hepatic or cardiac impairment, hypertension, micturition disorders. Elderly. Withdraw gradually.

Interactions

TCADs, amantadine, antihistamines, phenothiazines, antispasmodics, disopyramide, other anticholinergics.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Do not chew or crush sustained-release tablets. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, increased drowsiness, mental agitation, swelling of mouth or face, changes in vision, difficulty in speaking, skin rash. Avoid alcohol during therapy. Do not take OTC medications especially antidepressants, sedatives, pain medications without consulting prescriber. Urinate before taking medication. Patients who wear contact lenses should use artificial tears to avoid discomfort from dry eyes.

Onset: 1 hr. Duration: 4-6 hrs. Absorption: Oral: Readily absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: 14 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 2-4 hrs. Excretion: Urine (mainly).
