Indications

Secondary prevention post-MI. Hypertriglyceridaemia types IIb, III, IV.

Dosage

Adults: Post-MI: 1 cap daily with food. Hypertriglyceridaemia: Initially 2 cap daily with food, increase if necessary to 4 cap daily. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

GI disturbance.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Peanut or soya allergy. Precautions: Bleeding disorders, exogenous and secondary endogenous hypertriglyceridaemia (uncontrolled diabetes), renal or hepatic impairment. Fish allergy. Elderly (>70 years).

Interactions

Anticoagulants.

Advice to Patient

Take with meals. Contact prescriber immediately if chest pain occurs. Do exercise regularly. Check blood glucose level regularly and inform prescriber about changes. Blood glucose level must be controlled because it may lead to increased triglyceride levels. Have laboratory tests as advised by prescriber to check drug's effectiveness.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Rapidly hydrolyzed to free fatty acids in the intestinal lumen which then become incorporated into phospholipids, cholesterol and triglycerides. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: 79 hrs ± 47 hrs. Excretion: Includes oxidative catabolism to CO2 and water.
