Indications

Bacterial infections.

Dosage

Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Adults & Children: 1-2 drops every 2-4 hr for 2 days, then 1-2 drops 4 times daily for 5 days. Bacterial Corneal Ulcer: Adults & Children: 1-2 drops every 30 min and 1-2 drops every 4-6 hr after retiring for 2 days, then 1-2 drops every 1 hr while awake for 5-7 days, then 1-2 drops every 6 hr for 2 days.

Adverse Effects

Transient local irritation including photophobia; dizziness, numbness, nausea and headache. Corneal precipitates.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Soft contact lenses. Precautions: Minimize exposure to UV light. Risk factors for QT prolongation.

Interactions

Drugs that prolong QT interval.

Advice to Patient

Keep head tilted back while instilling drops. Bad taste in mouth, burning or stinging in eyes may occur but its temporary. Contact prescriber if there is constant pain, burning, swelling in eyes or visual changes. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Avoid prolonged use. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Minimal systemic absorption with ophthalmic use. Excretion: Urine.
