Antifungal, Systemic · Polyene antifungal
Indications
Oral, oesophageal and intestinal candidiasis.
Dosage
DROP AND SUSP: Oral infections, 1 mL four times daily. Intestinal infections, Adults: 5 mL four times daily. Children: 1 mL four times daily. Prophylaxis in neonates, 1 mL daily. For oral lesions retain susp in mouth and continue for 48 hr after clinical cure to prevent relapse. TABLET: Adults: 1-2 tab four times daily.
Adverse Effects
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea in high doses.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined.
Advice to Patient
Take with or without meals. Before swallowing, swish suspension and hold in the mouth for few minutes. Do not crush or chew tablets, swallow whole. Shake suspension well before using, remove dentures and clean mouth. Allow lozenges to dissolve in mouth. Contact prescriber if there is severe constant nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or if there is no improvement or worsening of condition. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Oral: Poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Not metabolized to any appreciable extent. Excretion: Faeces (as unchanged drug).
