Non-narcotic Analgesic · Benzoxazocine

Indications

Acute and chronic pain, including post-operative, dental, cancer and musculo-skeletal pain.

Dosage

Tab: Adults: 30-90 mg three times daily. Elderly: Initially 30 mg three times daily. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, nervousness, dry mouth, dizziness, urinary retention, hypotension, syncope, palpitations, GI upset, abdominal pain, paraesthesia, convulsions, tremor, confusion, hallucinations, angioedema, allergy.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem. Contraindications: History of convulsive disorders. Myocardial infarction. Precautions: Hepatic or renal insufficiency, urinary retention.

Interactions

MAOIs, anticholinergics, sympathomimetics, tricyclic.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Contact prescriber if there is nervousness, difficulty in urination, swelling of the skin and soft tissue around the eyes, nose and throat. Regularly visit prescriber for follow-up. Avoid alcohol during therapy. Avoid rich and spicy meals.

Absorption: Absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Bioavailability: Low. Half-life elimination: 4 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: Oral: 1-3 hrs. IM: Up to 1 hr. Excretion: Urine (mainly). Faeces (8%).
