Indications

Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, ENT infections. UTI.

Dosage

Lower respiratory infection, Upper respiratory infection, Skin infection, Urinary tract infection: Adults: 200 mg, then 100 mg every 12 hr or 50 mg every 6 hr. Children: >8 yr: 4 mg/kg, then 2 mg/kg every 12 hr.

Adverse Effects

GI upset, dermatological and hypersensitivity reactions, vestibular disorders, impaired hearing, intracranial hypertension. Rarely, pericarditis, myocarditis vasculitis, renal failure, interstitial nephritis, pancreatitis, hepatotoxicity, hyperpigmentation or SLE (discontinue).

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Renal failure. Precautions: Hepatic impairment. Monitor for hepatitis, SLE or unusual pigmentation every 3 months during long term therapy.

Interactions

Antacids, penicillins, mineral supplements.

Advice to Patient

Take with meals in an upright position. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Take a missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not take double dose. Shake oral suspension well before use and use calibrated measuring device. Contact prescriber if there is itching, rash, unrelieved diarrhoea or nausea, change in urinary pattern, burning urination, blurred vision, headache, dizziness, sore throat, fever, chills, fatigue occur or if there is no improvement. Inform prescriber if you become pregnant. Complete full prescription dosage even if you feel better. Avoid taking minocycline within 2 hours of taking an antacid or 3 hours of an iron preparation. Avoid direct sunlight, wear sunscreen, proper eyewear and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity.
