Metronidazole and Chlorhexidine

Indications

Inhibition of formation of dental plaque, prevention and treatment of gingivitis, maintenance of oral hygiene, in post-periodontal surgery or treatment regimen to promote gingival healing, management of recurrent aphthous ulceration, management of recurrent oral candidal infections, prevention of dental caries in high-caries risk patients when used in a regimen as an adjunct to fluoride.

Dosage

Children >6 yrs and adults: Once or twice daily for about 1 min, brush the teeth thoroughly with one inch of gel on a moistened toothbrush. Gingivitis: 1 month course is recommended. Prevention of dental caries: When used as part of a regimen, the gel should be applied for 5 mins nightly for 14 days in a close fitting tray. Repeat every 3-4 months.

Adverse Effects

Burning, irritation, dryness, transient redness, metallic taste, staining of teeth, tingling or numbness of extremities and nausea.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Pregnancy and lactation.

Interactions

Concomitant ingestion of disulfiram must be avoided.

Advice to Patient

For oral use only. Do not swallow. Keep out of the eyes and ears. If the gel comes into contact with the eyes, wash out promptly and thoroughly with water. Discontinue using product and inform prescriber if you experience soreness, swelling or irritation of the mouth. When treating mouth ulcers or oral thrush infections, treatment should be continued for two days after the symptoms have cleared up. When treating inflammation caused by denture rubbing, the dentures should be cleaned and soaked for 15 minutes twice a day in chlorhexidine mouthwash.
