Indications
Oedema, hypertension.
Dosage
ORAL: Oedema: Adults: 5-10 mg daily in the morning, increased if necessary to 20 mg daily, dose increased in resistant oedema. Max: 80 mg/day. Hypertension: Adults: Initially 5 mg daily in the morning. Maint: 5 mg once daily on alternate days. Elderly: 2.5 mg once daily in the morning.
Adverse Effects
Chest pain, chills, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, restlessness, vertigo, skin rash, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, constipation.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Anuria, hepatic coma/precoma. Precautions: Acute porphyrias. Correct hypokalaemia before starting treatment. Severe renal impairment.
Interactions
Cholestyramine, colestipol, diazoxide, digoxin, dofetilide (avoid), lithium, aminolevulinic acid (avoid), levosulpiride (avoid), mecamylamine (avoid), promazine (avoid).
Advice to Patient
Take with or without meals. Take early in day to avoid nocturia. Tabs may be crushed and mixed with water immediately before use. Potassium supplementation may be required during treatment. Avoid alcohol during treatment. This product can affect the results of certain lab tests (e.g., parathyroid function tests). Make sure laboratory personnel and your prescriber know you use this drug. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your prescriber. It may take up to 3-6 weeks to see a lowering of blood pressure.

Onset of action: Diuresis: Approx. 60 mins. Duration: =24 hrs. Absorption: Incomplete. Half-life elimination: 6-20 hrs. Time to peak, serum: Approx. 8 hrs. Excretion: Urine.
