Indications
Tab: Mild to moderate acute exacerbations of ulcerative colitis. Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis. Suppositories: Mild to moderate acute exacerbation of ulcerative colitis. Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis and crohn's ileo-colitis.
Dosage
Tab: Adults: Acute disease, 2.4 gm daily in divided doses; maintenance, 1.2-2.4 gm daily in divided doses. Children: Under 5 yr, not recommended. Acute attack: 5-18 yr, Body-weight under 40 kg, 10-20 mg/kg 3 times daily; Body-weight over 40 kg, 1-2 gm twice daily. The total daily dose may alternatively be given in 3 divided doses. Maintenance of remission: 5-18 yr, Body-weight under 40 kg, 7.5-15 mg/kg twice daily, total daily dose may alternatively be given in 3 divided doses; Body-weight over 40 kg, 2 gm once daily. Suppositories: Adults: 750 mg to 1500 mg rectally daily in divided doses with the last dose at bed time. Children: Under 12 yr, not recommended. Ulcerative proctitis: Acute attack: 12-18 yr, 1 gm daily for 2-4 wk. Maintenance: 12-18 yr, 1 gm daily.
Adverse Effects
Gl disturbances, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, pruritus, rectal discomfort, urge, rash Rare: mylagia, arthralgia, cardiomaypathy, pancreatitis, urine discoloration.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to salicylates, severe renal and liver impairment, pregnancy and lactation. Precautions: Raised blood urea or proteinuria.
Interactions
Lactulose. azathioprine 6-mercaptopurine, Products that decrease stool pH.
