Meloxicam

Indications
Rheumatoid arthritis, acute osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis.
Dosage
Adults: ORAL: Osteoarthritis: 7.5 mg once daily, if necessary to max 15 mg once daily. Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis: 15 mg once daily. Elderly: 7.5 mg once daily. SUPPOSITORY: 15 mg once daily; may be reduced to 7.5 mg once daily. Elderly: 7.5 mg once daily. Children: Relief of pain and inflammation in juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders in children intolerant to other NSAIDs: ORAL: 12-18 yr and body-weight under 50 kg, 7.5 mg once daily; 12-18 yr and body-weight over 50 kg, 15 mg once daily. SUPPOSITORY: Children: Above 16 yr, same as adult. Below 16 yr, not recommended.
Adverse Effects
GI perforation, ulceration, bleeding or upset; monitor patient. Muco-cutaneous reactions including pruritus, rash, urticaria, angioedema, photosensitivity, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. CNS or cardiovascular effects, blood dyscrasias, transient disturbances in liver tests. Headache, GI upset, fluid and electrolyte disturbances.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Active peptic ulcer, GI bleeding, aspirin/anti-inflammatory induced allergy, severe hepatic or renal failure, severe CHF, active inflammatory bowel disease, cerebrovascular bleeding, bleeding disorders. Treatment of pain after CABG. Precautions: Congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, renal failure, hypovolaemia, GI upset, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, cerebrovascular disease, other cardiovascular risk factors. Elderly.
Interactions
Anticoagulants, lithium, IUDs, methotrexate, cholestyramine, diuretics, cyclosporin, antihypertensives, thrombolytics, other NSAIDs, tacrolimus, antiplatelets, SSRIs, corticosteroids.
Advice to Patient
Take with meals. For oral suspension, shake bottle gently before use. Avoid alcohol and smoking during therapy. Discontinue medication and inform prescriber immediately if there is constant stomach pain, cramps or blood in stool. Contact prescriber if there is unusual cough, difficulty in breathing, unusual bruising or bleeding, chest pain, palpitations, fast heartbeat, swelling in extremities, blood in urine/stool/mouth/vomitus, acute fatigue, skin rash, itching, blisters, fever, changes in hearing, ringing in ears, yellowing of skin or eyes, difficulty in speaking. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Do not take increased amount of vitamin C, salicylate containing foods (curry powder, prunes, raisins, tea, licorice), medications containing aspirin or salicylate, NSAIDS during therapy without consulting…
