Indications

Monotherapy for short term treatment of primary insomnia characterised by poor sleep quality in patients aged = 55 years.

Dosage

Adults: 2 mg once daily 1-2 hrs before bedtime and after food, continued up to 13 weeks. Children: Under 18 yrs not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Headache, nasopharyngitis, back pain, arthralgia. Drowsiness. Slenyto: Also, mood changes, sinusitis, fatigue.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hepatic impairment. Autoimmune diseases. Severe renal impairment. Precautions: Renal impairment. History of seizures. Impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes. Elderly.

Interactions

Cimetidine, quinolone, carbamazepine, rifampicin. Fluvoxamine, cimetidine, 5- or 8-methoxypsoralen, oestrogens, other CYP1A2 inhibitors (eg, quinolones) or inducers (eg, carbamazepine, rifampicin), alcohol, benzodiazepines, other hypnotics (eg, zopiclone), imipramine, NSAIDs, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, other antihypertensives, anticoagulants, smoking.

Advice to Patient

Take after meals. Swallow whole. Females of reproductive potential must ensure contraception during treatment.
