Indications
Long-term female contraception.
Dosage
Adults: Administered SC into the anterior thigh or abdomen every 3 mths (12-13 wks). First inj be given only during the first 5 days of normal menstrual cycle. The second and subsequent inj should be given at 13 wk intervals, as long as the inj is given no later than 7 days after this time, no additional contraceptive measures are required. If the interval from the preceding inj is > than 14 wks (13 wks +7 days) for any reason, then pregnancy should be excluded before the next inj is given. After childbirth: The first inj must be given within 5 days to non-lactating females. Lactating females: The inj should be given no sooner than 6 wks post-partum.
Administration
It should be initiated under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Single-dose container should be at room temp. Shake vigorously just before use. The injector must be activated before use. Hold the injector firmly by the port. When injecting, the injector must be used with the needle downwards. Inject slowly for 5-7 seconds.
Adverse Effects
Depression, insomnia, anxiety, decreased libido, irritability, headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, acne, back pain, amenorrhoea, weight increase, irregular periods, breast pain/tenderness.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Contraindications: Pregnancy, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe hepatic impairment, carcinoma of breast or sex organs. Metabolic bone disease. Patients with active thromboembolic disease and in patients with current or past history of cerebrovascular disease. Precautions: Migraine headaches. Diabetes/family history of diabetes. Family history of heart disease/cholesterol problems. Past history of depression. Irregular/light/heavy periods. Stroke. Family history of breast cancer. Renal disease. Hypertension. Asthma. Epilepsy. An unusual breast X-ray, fibrocystic breast disease, breast nodules/lumps or bleeding from nipples.
