Indications
Infections caused by threadworm, whipworm, large roundworm, common & American hookworm, tapeworm.
Dosage
Threadworm infections: Children 6 mths onwards and Adults: 100 mg as a single dose. 2nd dose may be needed after 2 wks if reinfection occurs. Whipworm and Hookworm infections: Children 1 yr onwards and Adults: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days. Roundworm infections: Children: 1 yr: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days. 2-18 yrs: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days or 500 mg as a single dose. Adults: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days or 500 mg as a single dose.
Adverse Effects
Gl upset.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended.
Interactions
Cimetidine, metronidazole.
Advice to Patient
Take with or without meals. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Contact prescriber if there is unrelieved diarrhoea or vomiting, skin rash, skin itching, unusual fatigue or sore throat, abnormal thoughts, confusion, depression, anxiety. Take increased amount of fruit juice. To prevent reinfection, take measures such as wash hands and scrub nails carefully with soap and hot water before handling food, before eating and before and after toileting. Keep hands away from mouth. Keep toilets and daily clothes clean. Avoid walking barefoot and sitting directly on ground or grass.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Bioavailability: Low. May be increased by taking with a fatty-meal. Half-life elimination: 2.5-9 hrs. Cholestasis: Approx. 35 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 1.5-7.25 hrs. Excretion: Urine. Faeces.
