Indications

Osmotic diuretic, for decompression in concussion and cerebral injury.

Dosage

Adults: 50-200 gm by IV inf in 24 hr. The rate of administration is usually adjusted to maintain a urine flow of at least 30 to 50 mL per hr.

Adverse Effects

CHF, headache, convulsions, dizziness, rash, electrolyte balance disturbances, hyponatraemia, GI upset, polyurea.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Severe renal disease, dehydration, active intra cranial bleeding, severe pulmonary oedema. Precautions: Cardio-vascular and renal status should be evaluated.
