Magnesium Sulphate, Inj
Electrolyte & Combinations · Electrolyte
Indications
Eclampsia for the prevention of recurrent seizure. Magnesium deficiency and hypomagnesaemia. Emergency treatment of serious arrhythmias, especially in presence of hypokalaemia (when hypomagnesaemia may also be present). Myocardial infarction.
Dosage
Eclampsia: Adults: Initially IV 4 gm of magnesium sulphate (approx 16 mmol Mg) over 20 min followed by IV infusion at a rate of 1 gm magnesium sulphate every hr. Recurrence of seizures may require an additional IV bolus of 2-4 gm magnesium sulphate. Arrhythmias: Adults: IV injection of 8 mmol magnesium over 10-15 min, repeated if necessary. Myocardial infarction: Adults: IV injection of 8 mmol magnesium over 20 min, followed by IV infusion of 65-72 mmol of magnesium over the following 24 hr. Magnesium deficiency and hypomagnesaemia: Adults: 50 mmol of magnesium orally daily adjusted according to individual response. In acute or severe hypomagnesaemia: 35-50 mmol of magnesium by slow IV infusion (in glucose 5%) on the first day followed by 25 mmol daily until the hypomagnesaemia is corrected; up to a total of 160 mmol may be required. Alternatively by IM or slow IV.
Administration
