Levamisole

Anthelmintic · Antinematodal

Indications

Intestinal worm infections by A. lumbricoides; N. americanus; A. duodenale; E. vermicularis: T. trichiura; S. stercoralis; T. colubriformis.

Dosage

Single dose after meal. In severe hookworm infection, sec dose after 1 or 7 days is suggested. Adults: 120 mg. Children: 1-4 yr, 40 mg; 5-15 yr, 80 mg.

Adverse Effects

Usually mild and transient. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, giddiness, headache.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: In cases of microfilaraemia, transient fever may occur.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: 3-4 hrs. Metabolites: 16 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 1.5-2 hrs. Excretion: Urine (mainly). Faeces (small amounts).
