Bronchodilator & Anti-asthma Preps: Inhalants · Beta-2 agonist

Indications

Treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in adults, adolescents and children =6 yrs of age with reversible obstructive airway disease.

Dosage

Adults and Adolescents =12 yrs: 0.63 mg three times daily, every 6-8 hrs, by nebulization. If required, can be increased up to 1.25 mg three times daily. Children 6-11 yrs: 0.31 mg administered three times daily, by nebulization. Max, 0.63 mg three times daily.

Adverse Effects

Flu, body pain, tachycardia, dyspepsia, leg cramps, dizziness, nervousness, tremor, anxiety, cough, viral infection, rhinitis, sinusitis, dry mouth, increased urination.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Patients with coronary insufficiency, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, renal impairment and those who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines.

Interactions

Beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs.

Advice to Patient

Shake well before use.

Duration of action: 8 hrs. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: Single levalbuterol 1.25 mg: 3.3 hrs ([R]-albuterol). Cumulative albuterol 5 mg: 4 hrs. Excretion: Urine (80%). Faeces (20%).
