Latanoprostene Bunod
Miotic, Antiglaucoma Preps · Prostaglandin analogue
Indications
Reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Dosage
Adults and Children =16 yrs: 1 drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Children <16 yrs: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Eye irritation, redness (conjunctival hyperemia), eye pain, and increased eyelash length or thickness (reversible).
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: May be used in breast feeding. Contraindications: Active intraocular inflammation. Precautions: History of intraocular inflammation (e.g. uveitis, iritis), aphakia, pseudophakia with torn posterior lens capsule, known risk factors for macular oedema.
Advice to Patient
If using other eye drops concomitantly, wait at least 5 mins between applications. Contact lenses should be removed prior to administration. Reinsert after 15 mins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset of action: Reduction of intraocular pressure: Approx. 1-3 hrs. Max effect: 11-13 hrs. Metabolism: Rapidly metabolized in the eye to latanoprost acid (active metabolite) and butanediol mononitrate. Further metabolized hepatically. Time to peak, plasma: Approx. 5 mins (latanoprost acid).
