Indications
Serious infections resistant to other antibiotics.
Dosage
Adults: Acute infections, 1 gm IM daily in two to four divided doses for max 6 days. Children: 15 mg/kg IM daily in two to four divided doses for max 6 days.
Administration
Administered by deep IM inj into the upper outer quadrant of the gluteal muscles or by intermittent IV infusion over 30-60 min at a conc. of 2.5-5 mg/mL in D5W or NS. Also administered by intraperitoneal instillation and irrigation.
Adverse Effects
Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Myasthaenia gravis, Parkinsonism. Control blood levels and total dosage particularly in renal impairment.
Interactions
Neuromuscular blocking drugs, anaesthetic, ethacrynic acid, furosemide.
Advice to Patient
Take oral form with meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Contact prescriber if there is dizziness, hearing loss, and severe diarrhoea or headache. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.

Absorption: Oral: <1%. Half-life elimination: 3 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: IM: 1 hr. Excretion: Urine (majorly).
