Indications

Iron deficiency anaemia.

Dosage

Inj: By deep IM inj into the gluteal muscle or by slow IV inj or by IV infusion, calculated according to body weight and iron deficit, see product literature. Children: Not recommended.

Administration

IV: Prior to the first IV iron dextran therapeutic dose, administer an IV test dose of 0.5 mL. Administer the test dose at a gradual rate over atleast 30 seconds or over atleast 5 min. Although anaphylactic reactions known to occur following administration are usually evident within a few mins or sooner, it is recommended that a period of 1 hour or longer elapse before the remainder of the initial therapeutic dose is given. Individual doses of 2 mL or less may be given on a daily basis until the calculated total amount required has been reached. Iron dextran is given undiluted at a slow gradual rate not to exceed 50 mg (1 mL) per min. IM: Prior to the first IM iron dextran therapeutic dose, administer an IM test dose of 0.5 mL. Adverse Effects

Cardiac arrhythmias.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Anaemia not caused by iron deficiency. Iron overload or disturbances in iron utilization. Known hypersensitivity to iron mono- or disaccharide complexes. Serious liver or kidney damage. Precautions: Patients with asthma, history of allergy or chronic infection.
