Indications

Short-term treatment of moderate to severe melasma of the face.

Dosage

Adults: Apply once or twice daily for minimum 8 wk. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Erythema, irritation. Hyper- or hypopigmentation.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Eczema, cuts, abrasions. Avoid eyes and mucous membrane. Precautions: Avoid U-V light. Pregnancy.

Interactions

Keratolytics.

Advice to Patient

For topical use only. Apply, as advised by prescriber. Before application wash hands properly. Wash face with mild cleanser, rinse and dry with clean towel. Apply a thin layer of medication, rub lightly. Contact prescriber if there is worsening of condition, constant irritation, burning, lesions on the skin or if condition remains same. Avoid contact with open wounds, eyes, mouth, nose or mucous membranes. Exposure of affected areas to direct sunlight must be avoided because sunburn may occur. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Medicated products which have irritating or drying effects must be avoided. During daytime, moisturizers or non-irritating products may be used. Avoid using medication for long period of time.

Pharmacokinetics

HYDROQUINONE: Onset: Varies per individual. Duration: Varies per individual. Depigmentation effects usually persist for 2-6 months following discontinuance of therapy. TRETINOIN: Absorption: Systemic absorption is minimal after topical use (1%-31%). Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: Terminal: 0.5-2 hrs. Excretion: Urine. Faeces. FLUOCINOLONE: Absorption: Absorbed from normal intact skin. Inflammation and/or other disease processes in the skin increase percutaneous absorption. Occlusive dressings substantially increase the percutaneous absorption. Metabolism: Hepatic. Half-life elimination: 1.3-1.7 hrs. Excretion: Kidneys.
