Indications

Treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, including pneumonia caused by multi drug resistant strains of S. pneumoniae (MDRSP).

Dosage

Adults: 320 mg once daily. The following are the duration of treatment. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: For 5 days. Community-acquired pneumonia (mild to moderate severity): For 7 days. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Headache, dizziness, dermatitis, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, increase in transaminases, haemostatic imbalance, tremor, urticaria, vaginitis, vertigo.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to gemifloxacin, other fluoroquinolones. Precautions: May prolong QT interval; avoid use in patients with uncorrected hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia. Patients with significant bradycardia or acute myocardial ischaemia or at risk of seizures; discontinue in patients who experience significant CNS adverse effects. Tendon inflammation and/or rupture has been reported.

Interactions

Other medications known to prolong the QT interval (including class la and class III antiarrhythmics, cisapride, erythromycin, antipsychotics and tricyclic antidepressants).

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Swallow whole tablet with a glass of liquid. Take atleast 3 hours before or 2 hours after antacids or products containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc. Inform prescriber and discontinue medication if signs of inflammation or tendon pain occur or if there is rash, itching, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, facial edema, palpitations or chest pain. Contact prescriber if you experience hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, seizures, unusual fever or chills, vaginal itching, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, easy bleeding or bruising, severe diarrhoea that remains for 3 or more days, tendon pain or muscle pain. Watery or bloody stools can occur 2 or more months after therapy and can be serious, requiring immediate treatment. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.
