Furazolidone, Oral
Antidiarrhoeal · Nitrofuran derivative
Indications
Non-specific diarrhoeas, bacterial dysentery, food poisoning, typhoid fever, cholera.
Dosage
SUSPENSION: Adults: 4 tsp 4 times a day. Children: 1-4 yr, 1 tsp four times a day. TABLET: Adults: 1 tab four times a day.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Infant below one month (Neonates). Precautions: G6PD deficiency.
Advice to Patient
Take with meals. Report difficulty in breathing, fever, flushing, itching, rashes or muscle pain. Avoid alcohol during therapy and for 4 days afterwards. Meals and beverages containing tyramine and other vasopressor amines (for example, ripe cheese, beer, red and white wine, smoked or pickled meat, poultry, fish), OTC appetite suppressants, cough and cold medications and other drugs (unless prescribed) should be avoided during therapy and for atleast 2 weeks afterwards.

Absorption: Oral: Well absorbed. Metabolism: Rapid and extensive. Half-life elimination: 10 mins. Excretion: Urine (>65%). Faeces.
