Indications
Anovulatory infertility unresponsive to clomiphene citrate. Multifollicular stimulation in superovulation for IVF/ET, GIFT and ICSI.
Dosage
Adults: Anovulation: Initially usually 75 IU daily by SC or IM inj. Monitor response; see literature. Superovulation: Usually 150-225 IU daily by SC or IM injection alone or in combination with a GnRH agonist; see literature. Children: Not applicable.
Administration
Administer SC or IM to females and SC only in males. Reconstitution: Inject 1 mL of 0.45 % NS into vial of Follitropin Beta. Do not shake. Use immediately after reconstitution.
Adverse Effects
Ovarian hyperstimulation. Multiple or ectopic pregnancies. Injection site reactions, gynaecomastia, acne.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Tumours of pituitary, hypothalamus, ovary, breast or uterus. Fibroid tumours of uterus. Primary ovarian failure. Ovarian cyst or enlargement not associated with PCOD. Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Precautions: Exclude anatomical abnormalities. Monitor ovarian size and oestrogen response to avoid hyperstimulation.
Advice to Patient
If you are self-administering this medication, follow directions for administration and needle disposal. Administer exactly as directed. Contact prescriber immediately if there is abdominal pain or discomfort, constant nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, bloating, worsening of asthma, swelling/pain/redness of ankles/feet/hands, painful urination, irregular menstrual bleeding, acute back pain, rash, swelling or inflammation at injection site. Inform prescriber if a dose is missed. Have lab tests and ultrasounds done as recommended by prescriber.
