Flutamide

Cytostatic · Anti-androgen

Indications

Advanced prostatic carcinoma.

Dosage

Adults: 250 mg three times daily. Children: Not applicable.

Adverse Effects

Gynaecomastia, breast tenderness, galactorrhoea, GI disturbances, increased appetite, insomnia and tiredness, liver toxicity.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Perform periodic liver function tests. Fluid retention in patients with cardiac disease.

Interactions

Warfarin, amiodarone, ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine, ketoconazole, ofloxacin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, rifampicin.

Advice to Patient

Small, frequent meals may help to prevent loss of appetite. Contact prescriber if there is acute abdominal pain, numbness/pain/tingling of extremities, chest pain, palpitations, swelling of extremities, difficulty in breathing, unusual weight gain.

Absorption: Rapidly and completely absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic; rapid and extensive. Half-life elimination: Active metabolite: 6 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 1 hr. Excretion: Urine (mainly). Faeces (small amounts).
