Indications
Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Dosage
Tab/Cap: Adults: Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily. Chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily. Children: Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis: 6-12 yr, 30 mg twice daily; 12-18 yr, 120 mg once daily. Symptomatic relief of chronic idiopathic urticaria: 12-18 yr, 180 mg once daily. Susp: Seasonal allergic rhinitis: Children 2-11 yr: 30 mg bid. Chronic idiopathic urticaria: Children 2-11 yr: 30 mg bid. 6 month <2 yr: 15 mg bid.
Adverse Effects
Viral infections (cold, flu), headache, throat irritation. Drowsiness, dizziness.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Children under 12 years. Precautions: Drowsiness may occur and patient should be informed that the drug may affect performance of skilled tasks (e.g. driving).
Interactions
Aluminium and magnesium containing antacids.
Advice to Patient
Take before meals. Do not take with fruit juice. If you are also taking an antacid, give gap between administration of antacid and fexofenadine. Contact prescriber if there is drowsiness, sleepiness, irregulation in menstruation or if there is no improvement or worsening of condition. Do not take other depressants, sleep-inducing medications, alcohol without consulting prescriber.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset of action: 2 hours. Duration of action: 24 hours. Absorption: Rapid. Metabolism: Minimal (Hepatic: approx. 5%); 3.6% transformed into methylester metabolite found only in feces. Bioavailability: Approx. 33%. Half-life elimination: 14.4 hours (59% longer in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment [CrCl 41 to 80 mL/minute]; 72% longer in patients with severe renal impairment [CrCl 11 to 40 mL/minute]) Time to peak, serum: ODT: 2 hours (4 hours with high-fat meal); Tablet: Approx. 2.6 hours; Suspension: Approx. 1 hour. Excretion: Feces (80%) and urine (12%) as unchanged drug.
