Ferrous Sulphate

Iron Plain and with Folic Acid · Folic acid/Iron salt

Indications

Prophylaxis of iron, folic acid deficiency.

Dosage

Tab/Cap: Prophylaxis: Adults: 1 tab/cap daily. Maintenance: 1 tab/cap 2 to 3 times daily. Drop: Adults & Children over 6 yr: 0.6 mL daily. Infants and Children upto 6 yr: 0.3 mL daily. Syp: Children: (dose expressed in terms of elemental iron): Severe iron deficiency anaemia: 4-6 mg Fe/kg/day in 1 to 2 divided doses. Mild to moderate iron deficiency anaemia: 3 mg Fe/kg/day in 1 to 2 divided doses. Prophylaxis: 1-2 mg Fe/kg/day upto a max of 15 mg/day. Adults: (dose expressed in term of ferrous sulphate) Iron deficiency: 300 mg twice daily upto 300 mg 4 times/day or 250 mg (extended released) 1 to 2 times/day. Prophylaxis: 300 mg/day.

Adverse Effects

GI upset, dark stool, epigastric pain.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Controlled studies shown no risk. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Diverticular diseases, intestinal obstruction, haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis, haemolytic anaemia, red cell aplasia, repeated blood transfusion. Precautions: Inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal stricture, diverticular.

Interactions

Tetracycline, penicillamines, antacids, levodopa.

Pharmacokinetics

Onset of action: 4 days. Absorption: Up to 60%. Excretion: Urine (trace). Faeces (trace). Sweat, sloughing intestinal mucosal cells, menses.
