Iron Plain and with Folic Acid · Iron salt

Indications

Iron deficiency anaemia.

Dosage

Syp: Adults: Prophylaxis: 10 mL daily before food. Treatment: 20-30 mL daily in divided doses before food. Child: Prophylaxis and Treatment: 6-12 yr: 5 mL - 15 mL daily.

Adverse Effects

GI irritation, nausea, epigastric pain, constipation, diarrhoea.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Diverticular disease, intestinal obstruction, haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis, repeated blood transfusion. Precautions: Inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal strictures, diverticular.

Interactions

Tetracyclines.

Pharmacokinetics

Onset of action: 1 wk. Absorption: 10%-35% (normal Fe stores); 80%-95% (depleted iron stores); food decreases absorption by up to 60%. Excretion: Urine (trace). Faeces (trace). Sweat, sloughing intestinal mucosal cells, menses.
