Ferric Maltol
Iron Plain and with Folic Acid · Antianemic
Indications
Iron deficiency anaemia.
Dosage
Adults: 30 mg twice daily. Continue for at least 12 wks. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, discoloured faeces, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: May be used in breast feeding. Contraindications: Hemochromatosis and other iron overload syndromes. Repeated blood transfusions. Active inflammatory bowel disease. Precautions: Assess iron parameters before initiating treatment and monitor during therapy.
Interactions
Dimercaprol (avoid).
Advice to Patient
Take 1 hr before or 2 hrs after a meal. Do not open, break, or chew capsules.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Good. Food decreases bioavailability. Metabolism: Via glucuronidation (UGT1A6) and sulphation. Time to peak, plasma: 1.5-3 hrs. Excretion: Urine (39.8-60%).
