Indications

Constipation. Bowel clearance.

Dosage

Adults: 1 enema inserted to full length of nozzle. Children: 5-11 yrs: Half of adult dose or as prescribed.

Adverse Effects

GI upset, dizziness, chills, asthenia, chest pain, headache. Reports of nephrocalcinosis.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Conditions where the absorptive capacity of the colon is increased, acute GI conditions, GI obstruction, abdominal pain, perforation, ileus, megacolon, nausea, vomiting, renal failure, congestive heart failure. Precautions: Elderly and debilitated. Restricted sodium intake, renal impairment, heart disease, colostomy.

Interactions

Calcium-channel blockers, diuretics, other antihypertensives, NSAIDs, lithium, oral contraceptives, anticonvulsants, antidiabetics, antibiotics, TCADs, parathyroid hormone, drugs that prolong QT interval or affect electrolyte levels.

Advice to Patient

Do not use more than one dose of these products in 24 hrs. Even if you or your children do not have a bowel movement after taking a single oral or rectal dose, do not use another dose within 24 hrs. Contact a health care professional for advice. If you or your child experiences symptoms of kidney injury, seek medical attention immediately and do not take another dose of the product. Symptoms of kidney injury include drowsiness, sluggishness, decreased amount of urine, or swelling of the ankles, feet, and legs. Ensure you are adequately hydrated during product use.
