Indications
Amoebiasis, trichomonas intestinalis.
Dosage
Treatment of amoebiasis: Adults: 650 mg thrice daily for 20 days. Children: 10 mg/kg body-wt thrice daily.
Adverse Effects
Fever, chills, agitation, headache, rash, urticaria, pruritus, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, weakness, Optic neuritis, optic atrophy, peripheral neuropathy.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Pre-existing optic neuropathy, hepatic damage. Precautions: Optic neuritis, optic atrophy, peripheral neuropathy.
Interactions
Anticoagulants, phenobarbitone, alcohol.
Advice to Patient
Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Taking small, frequent meals may help to maintain nutritional status. Contact prescriber if there is unrelieved or severe nausea or vomiting, skin rash, fever or fatigue.

Absorption: Poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Excretion: Faeces (<10%).
